Montana is the 4th largest in area, the 7th least populous, and the 3rd sparsely populated of the 50 U.S. states. The western third of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges.  The economy is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming. Other significant economic activities include oil, gas, coal and hard rock mining, lumber, and the fastest-growing sector, tourism. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that Montana’s total state product in 2014 was $44.3 billion. per capita personal income in 2014 was $40,601, 35th in the nation. Montana has one city, Billings, with a population over 100,000; and two cities with populations over 50,000, Missoula and Great Falls.

The Montana Department of Agriculture (MDA) operates more than 30 programs, many funded entirely through user fees.
These include regulatory programs that protect producers, consumers and the environment, as well as development and
marketing programs to foster growth in Montana agriculture. The Director’s Office also serves as an advocate for Montana agriculture
in national and international forums and works to make the department’s programs accessible to the public.

Made in Montana: This program assists Montana businesses in developing and marketing their products both in and out of the state. The program, which also includes Grown in Montana and Native American Made in Montana, helps build recognition for products that are “authentically” Montana. There are over 3,400 program participants producing Montana products and 250 retail locations and restaurants specializing in and serving authentic Made in Montana items.
